Broomstones is a member-run organization with a mission to promote the sport of curling and to provide curling opportunities for people of all ages and abilities*. Membership is important to the club's viability, and every member is expected to contribute at least 8 hours of volunteer time to the club each season in some needed capacity. Our members also agree to a code of conduct that promotes community, equity, and the "Spirit of Curling". Membership in Broomstones gives privileges relating to access to playing the sport of curling at Broomstones (access to league play, practice ice, programs, training, and events) as well as the operation of the club itself (ice, facilities, kitchen, bar, etc.) and governance of the 501(c)(3)corporation (voting rights, participation in the Board of Directors, etc.)
There are three fundamental types of Membership:
- Full - a full member (21+) has access to all privileges that the club has to offer for curling privileges and governance of the corporation. Those members who are 18-20 in age have curling privileges and voting rights, but cannot serve as a club Officer or on the Board of Directors
- Social - non-curling membership geared toward former members who have moved away, or are taking an extended break from curling, but still want to be a club member. This level of membership does not have voting rights, and the member cannot be a club Officer or on the Board of Directors. Former Full members who now are Social Members and who want to return as Full Members will be prioritized over those on the waitlist.
- Limited - a member who has some curling privileges, defined by policy (i.e., access to specific curling programs) but does not have voting rights and cannot be a club Officer or on the Board of Directors
Membership dues for all types include dues paid to regional and national governing bodies (GNCC and USA Curling, respectively). USA Curling supports individual membership and other levels of membership that can be optionally procured outside of what Broomstones offers. During your membership renewal, you can opt-out of the club-associated USA Curling membership and purchase your own personal membership or alternatively stick with the club-associated USA Curling membership and optionally upgrade to a higher level on your own. Remember - by opting out completely or not accepting the club-associated USA curling membership, our club loses representation power when voting on USA Curling matters. Simply stated, the more Broomstones members we have as USA Curling members, the more representation and the greater influence we have on future policies and decisions for our members, club, region, and sport.
*Broomstones welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. While we strive to accommodate individual needs wherever possible, certain limitations may exist for some. Please note that our mid-twentieth-century facility is also not fully ADA compliant. If you have questions about accessibility or participation, please contact us — we’re happy to discuss how we can support your involvement.
League Play
A cornerstone of membership privilege is the ability to play in our diverse league offerings both daytime and in the evening. Our league options include social leagues, team leagues, a women’s league, pick-up leagues, and competitive leagues with varying costs depending on your interests. Our curling year begins in late September or early October and ends in early to mid-April. See our club calendar for exact dates.
Joining Broomstones
Broomstones has an open membership policy and welcomes all who want (and are capable) to safely enjoy the sport. However at this time, our club is currently at full membership capacity. Therefore we are maintaining two separate entry waitlists, based on curling experience:
- Experienced Curlers Waitlist: For individuals who have been a member of another curling club, have one or more years of curling experience (curling 10 or more times in one season is considered “one year” of experience), and are capable of playing without additional instruction.
- Beginner Curlers Waitlist: For individuals with little or no curling experience.
If you are interested in joining our waitlists, please click the button above and provide the necessary intake information - we will place you on the appropriate list. Each year, a number of membership invitations (based on availability) are extended to those on the waitlists, in chronological order.
- Beginner curlers (18 years or older) coming off their waitlist will be offered a Limited Membership and admission to our New Curler Training Program (NCTP) as space allows in that program. This is typically around 16-20 people per year. Upon successful completion of the NCTP (a 10 week program), Full Memberships will be offered.
- Experienced curlers (18 years or older) coming off their waitlist will be offered a Full Membership directly. The number of openings will depend on the level of attrition of current members
Note: curlers who are under 18 years of age do not need to be on the waitlist, as they can join our Juniors program directly and be a Limited Member, regardless of experience.
Requests for change in membership status can be sent to membership@broomstones.org.
